To begin with I want to say that there’s far from one Chakra system or even one definition of life force energy (ex. prana, ki, qi) and you cannot say that one definition is better than the other. The energy body is not physical and can manifest itself in a diverse number of energy centrals. Most of what there is to read on the web about chakras and their links to the body, are text written by modern time yogis and the information vary a bit, and so does the old writings differ between the traditions / branches. I think we should all be accepting of what others believe and not claim that we have the right answer or know a definite truth, it’s more complex then that. My text here is made up by facts I’ve read, interpretations I’ve made and experiences I’ve had with working with these energies.

All schools / traditions that I’ve studied talk about our bodies as built up by energy pathways and want energy to flow freely through these channels as well as say we need to “clean” this system from blockages, tension, bad emotions etc. Our physical and psychological health is, according to this, dependent on whether the system works well or not and illness, energy leakage, imbalances and stress, to name a few, are problems that can arise as a result of blockages to our energy flow. Just like quantum physics say that everything living is energy, that man and all other matters consists of energy waves, these traditions believe that energy is all around and in us.

Traditional Chinese medicine is built on the meridian system. It can be explained like energy channels, or pathways for energy in our body. Systems like this can be found in others, like the ayurvedic tradition for example, there its called nadis. The meridians are all over your body, much like your blood streams. They are placed both shallow and deep around our organs. Alongside these there are acupuncture points, that each corresponds to an organ in that meridian. We can regulate illness, pain, head aches etc. in different way by stimulating these points. This is what they work with within the traditional chinese medicine, like acupressure, acupuncture, zone therapy etc.

Clearing these energy pathways is also what I work with when I give Reiki, a Japanese style energy medicine.

These energy channels/pathways and our chakras are part of an intergrated system. Chakras often are symbolized as spinning wheels. You can say that each chakra has a connection to different body parts and to the nervous system. Looking at it that way helps us understand how mental and emotional states are linked to different parts of our body. There are chakra systems with 4, 5, 6, 7 ,9, 10 and 25 chakras (probably even more) depending on what tradition you look at. Within the oldest ones like the Tibetan Buddhism they usually use 4 chakras: mashasukha chakra (head), sambhoga chakra (throat), dharma charka (heart), nirmana chakra (navel).

No matter the tradition the chakras are placed alongside you body, from the spine upwards to the highest point of your head. Every chakra controls the physical functions of the body where they are placed and when the body is healthy and balanced they spin correctly (clock wise motion), when unbalanced we need to adjust the energy. Generally speaking the head/crown chakra takes in sun energy, the universe and expand the spiritual while the chakra at the body’s lowest point, like the root chakra, takes in the earths energy.

I’ve read that the mantras believed to be connected to each chakra, according to old texts, actually are connected to the element of the chakra, so you can use them while working on the elements, regardless of the chakra. LAM = earth, VAM = water, RAM – Fire, YAM = wind, HAM = universe.

When it comes to crystals recommended for each chakra, I do believe they can help us, but I don’t think it’s enough to just buy a bag of “love stones” or that we get better self confidence just by putting a specific gemstone on the solar plexus chakra. I don’t want to say that it don’t work and so many say it does, but my personal opinion and experience is that for a crystal to be helpful it’s about what you charge it with more than that it has a certain energy from the start. I’m giving suggestions for crystals and gems below, ones that usually are connected to the specific chakra, personally I like working with them or using them when making jewelry because it feels more creative and helps keep me focused on the task at hand.

We humans have chakras in the middle of our palms as well, and we all have the ability to balance the energy in our own body by using these. If you want to know more about this, get in touch. I’m happy to teach you. Alternatively you can come to me and I’ll balance them for you, for example we could do a reikisession or chakra meditation. I work intuitively and not in a certain sequence  or technique.
